The African continent is famous for its wide variety of animals like lions, elephants, giraffes, hippos and a lot more.

However, like the popular saying

“you can’t have it all,”

so are some popular animals which are not native to Africa and cannot be found here except maybe in captivity where possible.

1. Tiger

Tigers are felines (falidae family) and one of the 37 species of the cat family and the biggest of them all.

You may not believe that this wild cat is one of the animals not found in Africa.

Tigers are native to some Asian countries especially India where they have been known to attack and kill humans.

The Siberian tiger can be found in Russia and cold regions around there.

Tigers can be breed with lions to birth hybrids known as ligers or tigons.

2. Bear

Hope you know we are not talking about teddy here, but the real brutal and giant bear?.

There are 8 species of bears, the popular ones being, polar bear, brown bear, giant panda and the American black bear.

They are found in Asia, Europe, North America and South America.

They are considered one of the most intelligent animals in North America.

3. Alligator.

The lack of alligators in Africa is a facts many find very hard to believe.

This is because any reptile that looks close to an alligator has been called one.

Many people mistake the African dwarf crocodile found in West Africa and Central Africa for alligators because they assume all crocodiles are big.

Even monitoring lizards have erroneously been called alligators.

Although alligators and crocodiles belong to the same family, they are different taxonomic families.

They so much resemble and difficult to tell apart.

One of the ways to distinguish them is their mouth.

An alligator has a wide, rounded, ‘U’- shaped snout with a larger nose while that of a crocodile is pointed like a ‘V’ and has smaller nose.

Alligators are native to only USA and China.

4. Kangaroo.

These lovely animals as popular as they are, can only be found in Australia.

It is a marsupial from the family Macropodidae which means large foot.

It is a well known fact that kangaroos carry their young in a pouch around their stomachs.

A baby kangaroo is called a joey.

5. (Common) Anaconda snake.

This one is particularly a snake specie.

It is also called green anaconda or common water boa.

Made popular by the movie, Anaconda, it is truly the heaviest and one of the longest snake specie in the world.

They have been dubbed ‘man eaters’.

It is found only in the tropical forest of South America, where they leave near swamps and rivers.

They have the ability to submerged under water for 10 minutes.
